Rights and Responsibilities

If you’ve ever seen the Triggernometry YouTube channel with Konstantin Kisin and Francis Foster you’ll know that they always end their interviews with the question, “What is one thing we’re not talking about as a society that we should?” I thought of something.

The separation of rights and responsibility. We need to realize they both go hand in hand with the idea of citizenship. For a long time, it seems that most demand their rights without considering the responsibility that comes with those rights. Along with the right of free speech is the responsibility to be as honest as possible and not defraud others. With the right to bear arms is the responsibility to learn gun safety as well as learning how to properly use and store them.

Conversely, we often place responsibility on some without giving them the accompanying means, or rights, to fully accomplish them. How often do we give someone the task to do something and let them know that failure will have dire consequences, but we don’t give them authority over budget, schedule, or the power to hire and fire. We demand that parents cloth, feed, and prepare their children to become productive citizens, but at the same time deny them the right to know what the schools are teaching or the knowledge that their children are asking to become transexual. We even deny them the right to discipline (I said discipline, not abuse) their children.

We need to return to coupling rights with responsibility.
